The reason for the accolades garnered at the Chorales June, 2002 concert will be evident as the J Weldon Norris Chorale continues the tradition of musical holiday excellence Washington, DC is so well known for.
The Chorales namesake, Dr. J Weldon Norris, has been a faculty member since the 1970s of the famous capstone of education," Howard University. In addition to his many academic duties at Howard, Dr. Norris has been a member of many area boards of arts institutions; as well as being a noted adjudicator, conductor, oft-requested lecturer, arranger, and Governor-appointed member of local arts committees.
No stranger to academia, Dr. Norris received his Ph.D. from Indiana University, studying with the noted Julius Herford. He was later appointed a Ford Foundation Fellow and further advanced his studies with the Swedish Radio Choir, while in Sweden. As an historian, Dr. Norris has held workshops and lectures on proper conducting technique and the history of various musical and compositional forms, as well as coordinating an advanced vocal production workshop at Howard University with Ms. Leontyne Price.
