CPS to Bring Advanced Location-Based Technology to Intel Wireless Products

CPS E-OTD Technology to Enable Accurate, Location-Based Services in Phones, PDAs

CPS E-OTD Technology to Enable Accurate, Location-Based Services in Phones, PDAs

Cambridge, UK: Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd (CPS) today announced it is working with Intel Corporation to integrate its E-OTD high accuracy location technology into a range of its products aimed at the wireless and handheld market segments.

Intel is working with CPS to integrate E-OTD technology into a range of mobile devices running Intel® Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA) building blocks. This will enable users of PDAs and smartphones to take advantage of a growing number of commercial location based services in the U.S. and beyond.

According to recent research*, the location-based services market will grow from around $1bn worldwide this year to an estimated $15bn worldwide by 2007. It is predicted that consumer-driven infotainment" services -- such as wheres my nearest?" and friend finder" along with news, traffic conditions, proximity and community services -- will drive market take-up.

"Location based services are a critical capability for mobile platforms," said Tony Sica, vice president of marketing for Intels Wireless Communications and Computing Group. We believe Intel PCA provides a solid platform to help realize the potential of location services. It is an open platform that supports rich applications and leading location determination technologies like E-OTD."

According to Chris Wade, CEO of CPS, todays announcement is further validation of E-OTD as a global standardised location technology: This is hugely significant for E-OTD -- and will further drive the availability of location-enabled devices on a global basis to support the expanding market for commercial and personal safety services."

About CPS:

Cambridge Positioning Systems Limited (CPS) is the key enabler for high accuracy location in the GSM wireless world. Its innovative E-OTD (Enhanced Observed Time Difference) technology allows network operators to develop new services that improve the safety of their customers and deliver profitable applications.

Regarded as the location standard for the GSM market, E-OTD (Enhanced Observed Time Difference) uses sophisticated mathematical algorithms to determine a users position. CPS has licensed this cost effective technology --deployed in both the wireless network and the mobile device -- to leading global vendors for integration into their network infrastructure products.

Technology trials and deployments are currently underway in the US, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.
