New Book of Short Stories Wins Word Thunder Award For Excellence

Carolyn Howard-Johnson's new book, "Harkening," was given WordThunder and Book Banter's most prestigious award this week.

Sarah Mankowski, editor of the two sites, says "(Howard-Johnson's) prose flow(s) with rich descriptions and attention to detail." She announced her top award on Monday, Dec. 9.

"Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered" is creative nonfiction, a new term for an old genre. This form is well suited to examine the truths in fiction and the little white lies inherent in fact. The foreword explains how the author tells true stories remembered as truly as if they were photographs, as creatively as if they were fiction. Each story in the collection may be read separately, but together they feel like a novel, a story that travels lineally from the beginnings of one family's collective memory in Michigan as they settle in Utah and move out of it, Diaspora -fashion, into California.

Howard-Johnson's first book, "This is the Place," won the Reviewers' Choice Award and six others and was an NUW Book Club selection.
