PRESS RELEASE
SF State Students Release CD Celebrating Diversity of Local Music Scene!
As a class project, students at San Francisco State University (SFSU) have created their own record label and released a compilation CD called Diverscity (sic). The label, State of Sound Recording, is entirely staffed and managed by students in the SFSU class, The Independent Record Label, A-Z. The class, part of SFSU's Music Recording Industry (MRI) certificate program, is taught by Michael Brae, CEO for Hitman Records.
Brae acts as an advisor to the student label, but does not direct its activities. The class elected a CEO, Craig Means, from their own ranks along with leaders for internal departments such as A&R, Promotions, and Sales & Marketing.
Diverscity is available for purchase at local San Francisco Borders, Tower Records, Rasputan, and Amoeba retail stores. The CD includes twelve acts in a variety of genres, including hip-hop, rap, alternative, and reggae - highlighting the diversity of great musical talent that calls the bay area home.
The fall 2002 semester, the first time the class was offered, created extra challenges for the students. In addition to producing and releasing Diverscity, they also had to create the initial label infrastructure - the organizational structure, label name, and legal relationships. It is anticipated that the class will be repeated on a regular basis with additional CDs to follow.
Acts included on Diverscity

Def Connection
Carlos Mena
Sam Seven
