Owners of the newly released, DELL AXIM X5, get a website community.
Just release in late November, the Dell Axim, hit the PDA market by storm. Dell's $50.00 rebate made it easy for non-PDA types to own a pocket pc. With no true website community to be found, Chris Leckness decided to take on the task of gathering the Axim masses.
When Dell release the much anticipated "Axim x5", many consumers rushed to dell.com to purchase their new toys. Dell stormed into the PDA world with a more affordable and very competive Pocket PC. Forums on general Pocket PC sites added threads related to the Dell Axim, but there were no websites to unite the Axim Nation.
Chris Leckness, a web design hobbyist, had always wanted a Pocket PC. When Dell annouced a $50.00 rebate on the new Dell Axim X5, He jumped all over it. Wanting to know more about his new toy, Chris searched the web for answers. He was unhappy with the results he found so he decided to build a site of his own. He decided to pucrchase the domain aximsite.com. In addition to aximsite.com - he also registered aximplanet.com, aximland.com, aximworld.com, and aximplace.com. On Saturday, December 14th, 2002, he began on the site and by late afternoon he published the code. While the site was still under construction, the core idea and main funtions of the site were in place. He then decided to post the site on several forums to spark an interest. The interest was overwhelming. Within 4 hours, aximsite.com received over 500 unique visitors.
Site Owner and Designer, Chris Leckness "I was expecting to get a few dozen people that wanted to check it out, but I never imaged that so many users were this hungry for a site that is dedicated to Axim owners."
Now, still within it's 1st week of it's launch, Chris is still working on making the site even better. The site has already received numerous emails from software and hardware vendors wanting Aximsite.com to review their products. The site has also received 300 plus emails thanking Chris for his hard work in putting this site online and offering to help in anyway possible.
Aximsite.com and Chris' main concern with the site is to keeping the "Axim Owners Only" idea. There are no plans to branch out to other audiences, but there are plans for the use of Aximplanet.com to be used as a Mobile Optimized site, allowing users of Axims and other PDAs to view the reviews and key forums without the hassle of scrolling left to right.
When asked by a co-worker if he was happy with the outcome of the site, he replied "Sure ! I love it. Web Design is like an artform, I just want people to see what I did. But I am worried about the cost of the SUPERSIZED BANDWIDTH." Chris has the site hosted with M3Server.com, a local hosting company with an OC3 connection and great suppport. He is funding the site out of pocket and hopes to land a few advertisers to help defray the cost of hosting.
