Deena Houghton had the idea for friend-ships.com and 'liked it so much she launched the company' in 2001.
Dubbed 'the largest & friendliest port in the world', friend-ships.com was founded by Deena Houghton after working on the worlds most luxurious cruise ships for over five years as a fitness instructor and salon manager. Deena realised that due to the transient nature of shipping (either as passenger or crew) there needed to be a focal point to aid communications between seafarers.
Deena was raised in both Liverpool U.K and Vancouver Canada, two very busy shipping Ports and comes from a seafaring family who also expressed a need to contact friends they had made whilst sailing as passengers to Australia in the 1960's. With the internet being a relatively new concept for world-wide communication, it was now possible to reconnect with good friends, both passengers and crew she had made whilst at sea. After searching the internet, Deena came to the conclusion that other people were also looking for their old ship mates and was unable to find a web site that provided this service, which spurred her onto create www.friend-ships.com.
With the help of the Princes Trust, Business Link U.K (Greater Merseyside Enterprise) and Deena's experience of life at sea, she was able to create this unique, professional, comprehensive and exciting site, so within minutes old ship mates from around the world can reconnect.
It has taken a vast amount of time, energy, investment and research to compile the worlds most extensive ship database of all types and it has become a full time operation. Friend-ships members include passengers & crew from cruise ships, naval ships, tankers, ferries, large motor vessels, sailing ships and containers, the list is endless and ongoing. The greatest reward of taking on such a huge task, is the joy of receiving letters from sailors who were at sea in the 1950's and now have the facility to find their old friends. With ship societies who try to maintain contact monthly throughout the world now having the means to keep in touch anytime.
