Vicki Almstrum Joins RepeatWeb Advisory Board
Noted Computer Science Researcher Brings Academic and Business Experience to Software Company
AUSTIN, TX - 2/27/2002 - RepeatWeb, Inc. today announced the appointment of Vicki Almstrum, Ph.D. to the companys advisory board.
Vicki Almstrum is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. For the past five years, she has been teaching an innovative project-based software engineering course, which combines community service with the process of developing high quality software. In May 1999, she received a Teaching Excellence Award from the University's College of Natural Sciences and was also nominated for the College's Service Award.
Dr. Almstrum's research focus is in the area of computer science education. Many of her contributions have been in the form of organizing and presenting workshops, doctoral consortia, and other activities targeted at improving the acceptance of and expectations for computing education research. Her research interests also include the areas of software engineering and formal methods. Each semester she supervises a number of undergraduate students in independent reading and research. She is currently supervising two doctoral students in the area of computer science education.
Dr. Almstrum has been a guest researcher at the Department of Computer Systems at Uppsala University in Sweden (1995 and 1997). She is active in the Computer Science Education Research community, for example in the Runestone project, a multinational research study of the use of distributed project teams. Dr. Almstrum was elected to the Board of Directors of the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2001.
Dr. Almstrum received her Ph.D in Computer Science Education at the University of Texas at Austin in May 1994. Her dissertation title was "Limitations in the Use of Mathematical Logic by Novice Computer Science Students". In this research, she studied student difficulties with key concepts from the theoretical foundations of computer science. Dr. Almstrum has worked for Motorola in Tempe, AZ (4 years) and Philips Electronics in Stockholm, Sweden (4 years), where her responsibilities ranged from analysis and design through quality assurance, standards and methodologies.
