Epic Systems Enters Naming Rights Battle for Enron Field

The Houston Astros have a new suitor for renaming former Enron Field. Epic Systems suggests shorter terms to allow smaller entities to participate and avoid the debacles caused by corporate collapses.

2002    Epic Systems Corporation founder and CEO Paul Daniels stated today that his company will attempt to enter the bidding war for naming rights to the former Enron Field, home of the Houston Astros. "We've thought this through and it only makes sense for Drayton McLane and the Astro's organization to rethink their position on naming rights and pursue all viable options," stated Daniels. "In this day and age of fast fortunes, and equally as fast misfortunes, it would behoove sports entities to look at naming rights as short term options. Why tie yourself to a company that may, or may not be, perceived publicly to be a "lucky charm" over the long haul?"

It's common knowledge that the Enron organization, along with PSINet Stadium, and some others that jumped on the naming rights bandwagon now has the proverbial egg on their face due to the rapid decline in public perception of those corporations.

Daniels infers, based on a suggestion submitted to the Houston Chronicle by an astute reader, that temporary naming rights makes more sense. " It would be prudent to erect easily changeable, electronic signs and award the naming rights to someone on a short term basis", furthered Daniels. "Tickets are easy to print; brochures and program guides are short term. Furthermore, in this day and age of free agency, why is it such a stretch to believe that sporting venues have a longer shelf life than that of the very athletes that compete in those same venues? Its not uncommon for other sporting events, for instance golf and college bowls, to engage multiple sponsors over their lifetimes. Why not baseball?"

When asked if the annual price tag for naming rights was a bit expensive for a rather unknown company Daniels responded with, Sure, Im concerned with cost. Cost is a major factor in all aspects of any business. But if the Astros will entertain our suggestion of shorter terms it makes it affordable for companies our size. Were Houston based and market worldwide so we fit the general criteria". Daniels chuckled and said, Besides, we only want the rights to home games so that should cut the cost in half right there".
