To Implement Web Services, Technical Infrastructures Must Change!

Although Web Services are being promoted as technology independent and platform agnostic, these simplistic statements hide the truth that Web Services will drive a change in the technical infrastructure implemented within an organisation, according to Web Services – From Components to Services, a recent Report from Europes leading IT analyst organisation, Butler Group.

According to Mike Thompson, Principal Research Analyst at Butler Group. Although that change will be easier to implement and manage (due to the independent nature of the Web Service standards), than, say, the move to a client/server architecture; changes will have to take place."

Technical infrastructures are conceptually implemented as discrete parts that handle input, output, and control or aggregation of related I/O data. The Web Service model demands that these three elements are brought together, with complete flexibility in respect of usage for any of the three.

This leads towards server consolidation with switchable CPU usage, dynamic partitioning, and a re-examination and extension to load balancing and routing. Load balancing will have to switch from being traffic focused towards a content-based model, and routing rules will be based on application service.

This centralisation of the technical infrastructure leads to a requirement to centralise other elements within the framework; such as; security, process flow rules, development methodologies, and continuous testing.

Butler Group will be covering this and further issues in their forthcoming ‘Web Services - The Technologies, Strategies, and Methods that will Transform the way we use IT Symposium.

The two-day Symposium will deal with the issues of understanding, planning and executing a Web Services strategy. The event will be at the London Heathrow Marriott, from 17 to 18 April 2002. Current sponsors and exhibitors include:
