Frank Lloyd Wright stated, architecture is frozen music". From this statement MASS Ensemble and the Wright Way have created a project that explores the musical and spatial relationships of sound to natural structures. Over 15,000 feet of musical brass wire will stretch from an outdoor stage to the top of Mountain Peak transforming the earth into a giant harp. Audience members will watch the performance from under a canopy of musical strings stretching thousands of feet over their heads engulfing them in vibration. MASS Ensemble will perform their unique musical arrangements on the strings accompanied by cello, bass, percussion, and movement.
Performances will also include some of the Ensembles other unique instrumentation. Drumbrella, a giant spinning drum sculpture; Wing Body Harp, a spiny wing structure brought to life through movement; and the 26 foot Long Bow Harp. These instruments are unique to MASS as they were invented by Ensemble member Bill Close. After each performance, audience members will be invited to play all of the Ensembles invented instruments.
When MASS Ensemble strings and plays an environment, its structural elements are translated into musical form. The rhythm and pattern of the landscape are called forth and explored aurally and kinetically.
The science of long string resonance is being developed by Bill Close and the MASS Ensemble team. Through the exploration of the compression wave, they have learned to tune and perform on strings ranging from 20 to 700 feet in length.
