NICOLE NAYLORS FIRST NOVEL SLOW TURNING PAIN IS A TESTAMENT TO THE RESILIENCY OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 3, 2002 - hot off the AmErica House presses is Nicole Naylors debut novel "Slow Turning Pain", the story of a young womans soul on fire. (ISBN: 1-58851-609-1)

Jaime Sanders has been running from her past since she fled from Ajo, Arizona after high school and swore she would never look back. Her travels have taken her to a life she never dreamed and into the company of a wealthy New Zealand playboy, a beautiful exotic dancer with Mafia connections and a world famous model. But it seems Jaime can never put enough distance between herself and the pain from the past. Jaime has finally managed to make a new life for herself; achieving the money, power, and status that she had always dreamed... but even those things aren't enough to stop the darkness inside her soul from consuming her. Returning to that small southern Arizona town to confront her past and the great tragedy that has shaped her life might be the only way that she will ever find peace.

Slow Turning Pain is a rich account of astonishing confusion, loss and denial that is lifted to triumph through faith, love, endurance and the healing power of friendship. It shows how the "dark nights" of the soul can be "a wake up call that breaks the shell of our understanding". This book is about "the newness that can emerge in our souls when that shell is broken; the freedom to be ourselves and the awakening to a whole new dimension of life." In this novel, Jamie Sanders arises like the mythical Phoenix from her ashes to find freedom, transformation and a spiritual homecoming.

"The idea for this novel came to me while I was listening to a haunting song by contemporary Christian recording artist Cindy Morgan from her album ‘Listen. In the self-titled song ‘Jamie, it describes a young woman named Jamie who is lost and running from her past. The song made me start to wonder what this girl might be like and what kind of pain would drive her so hard," said Nicole Naylor, author of Slow Turning Pain. "The story just kind of grew from there and took on a life of its own. I remember that I would play Morgans CD over and over to help me get inside this hurting young womans head while I wrote the novel."

"I had just moved to California from Texas in order to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology so I was already in an introspective mode. I was also studying the Bible with a pastor from a small church in San Diego and for the first time the stories of the Old Testament really came to life for me. I kept seeing this overriding theme of endurance through faith in the lives of all the saints. I wanted to try to capture that element in my novel and bring it to hurting people who are struggling with their own demons to show them that there is a light at the end of the tunnel."

"My mother had also recently died after a struggle witrh cancer and I was trying to deal with that whole situation," Naylor adds with a sigh. "It is amazing how one event can shake you to the depths of your foundation. Its kind of like throwing a rock into a pond, events like that make a big splash and you feel the ripples all throughout the rest of your life for quite a long time. In this novel I wanted to capture that splash and all of its ripples. I wanted to show how defining events in your past cling to the present and color the future. These events become the rich threads that are woven into this tapestry that we call life and they often dramatically change the entire design."

"I sought out independent publisher AmErica House because my novel deals with a lot of sensitive and controversial issues," adds Naylor. "Although there are overriding Biblical themes racing throughout the end of this book, the beginning of the book is very dark. It deals with hot, button-pushing, controversial topics like rape, abuse, depression and exotic dancing… to top it all off the main supporting character also happens to be a lesbian - the combination of those topics make it something that most mainstream publishers wouldnt want to touch. Most people see it clearly defined that there is an audience for the Christian stuff and then theres an audience for the ‘other stuff contained in my novel and you rarely see the two of them overlap."

"In this novel I wanted to allow the reader to experience a variety of lifestyles that they might not encounter in their own everyday life," adds Naylor while flashing one of her irresistably charming smiles. "For example, My lesbian supporting character has received a lot of pain in life because of her great beauty. There are a lot of rumors spread about her in the small Minnesota farming town where she grows up because she develops into her womanly figure at such an early age, she is labeled as a whore an ostracized in the town and eventually winds up running away. She ultimately becomes an exotic dancer to protect herself from that pain in the only way she knows how - she decides to be in control of it and exploit it to her advantage. Shes very compassionate and does sort of a search and rescue effort to protect other young, vulnerable girls. Its her goal to try to rescue young girls in pain and Jaime becomes one such girl. This character serves as a sort of makeshift mother that helps the central character to come to terms with and endure the pain in her life. In the book I also have a Jewish character that isnt portrayed in the stereotypical style. I use him to share Jewish traditions, deep family ties/heritage and a strong sense of faith. I also have an interracial, Native American and Irish cowboy character who serves as the heroines love interest at the end of the novel. He provided a great vehicle for communicating some new age messages on the interconnectedness of the universe and the circle of life. Then there is a Japanese American woman that struggles with balancing her ethnic identity in the Anglicized American Dream depicted by advertisers and her parents anger over being placed in American holding camps during the second world war. …I tried to address a lot of issues in this book. All of these diverse lives blend together into a rich tapestry to make a beautiful portrait of modern American life with a racy, twist."

There are sub-plots running through the main theme and all of the stories fit together in a jigsaw puzzle like pattern to paint a complete portrait much like the patches in a quilt. Wait five minutes and everything can change and it actually does in this novel. The story opens on the darkest day of Jaimes life, then you are immediately transported back to where it all began. The reader crawls right alongside Jaime through all of the darkness of her pain and is ultimately lifted up with her as she soars to her glorious spiritual transformation.

This tale is ruthlessly truthful, astonishingly brazen, at times offensive and yet still a delicately poignant, romantic story that shatters common assumptions and belief systems. Classified as psychological suspense fiction, Naylors first novel is a testament to the fact that time, love and faith can heal any wound.
