SoftVelocity Debuts New Code Generator for ASP Applications

Developer Oriented Web Scripting Tool Automates Web Database Access Clarion/ASP generates Active Server Pages which provide query, navigation, and editing procedures for databases over the web, increasing the productivity of web designers and enabling business application developers to easily translate" behaviors from line of business applications to the web.

Pompano Beach, Florida. June 10 – SoftVelocity, Inc., developer of the Clarion for Windows development environment, today announced the release of Clarion/ASP. Clarion/ASP generates Active Server Pages (ASP) which provide query, navigation, and editing procedures for databases over the web, increasing the productivity of web designers and enabling business application developers to easily translate" behaviors from line of business applications to the web. The generated ASP pages integrate into any existing site via the use of style sheets and HTML templates, and can be accessed via links to and from existing pages of the site, or operate as a complete web application. The code produced additionally includes important features necessary for public and high volume sites such as the ability to view only the parts of a database owned" by an individual user. The resulting applications are highly reliable, contain sophisticated error checking, and can scale to many thousands of users.

By creating a unique multi-discipline tool, one which combines scripting, ADO (Microsoft Active Data Objects), design (via Cascading Style Sheets and HTML templates) then basing it all on a database dictionary and application repository, weve organized and automated a development process which previously had been based on one-off wizards and lots of time in the editor hand coding the same functions," said Robert Zaunere, CEO of SoftVelocity. In fact, by completely separating the application logic and the user interface, weve given sites the best of both worlds: it lets the web designer edit the page design, and the developer control the database application. The developer can even change the application behavior and regenerate the ASP page without disturbing the web designers revised layout, and vice versa."

The generated pages easily integrate into existing sites. The application repository can store preferences and generate a style sheet to match existing font, color, and other style standards. HTML templates can incorporate page elements standard throughout the site. By providing URL parameters and/or POST values, any other page on the site can call a generated page containing a specific record ready for editing or viewing, a set of records based on a filter passed to it, or a new record, partially filled out with information already collected elsewhere in the site. Likewise, the generated pages may link to other pages at the site, passing values according to the data being viewed or edited.

Clarion/ASP features many useful canned behaviors such as the ability to limit data access so that users may edit/view only records that they own." A flexible security model allows for defining both type of access (none, view, edit) and who may access each page. Other advanced features are provided such as automatically providing a dropdown list of choices whenever a required value must be chosen from a related table.

Clarion/ASP, priced at $595 per developer, requires either Clarion for Windows Professional Edition or Clarion Enterprise Edition. White papers, product sheets, sample applications and additional information are available at http://www.softvelocity.com.
