Tools Enable Development of Portable Multimedia Applications for Next-Generation Mobile Devices Based on SH-Mobile Processor
AUSTIN, Texas, June 7, 2002 – Metrowerks today announced that its CodeWarrior Development Tools for the intent® Media Platform is the first third party development tool suite to support Hitachi, Ltd.s new SH-Mobile (SuperH Mobile Application Processor) series. SH-Mobile allows high speed processing of multimedia applications for next-generation mobile phone systems.
Were very pleased that Metrowerks is supporting our SH-Mobile processor SH7290, providing developers with a leading set of tools that will take advantage of the multimedia capabilities in our SH-Mobile series," said Ikuya Kawasaki, department manager, Mobile System Department, Semiconductor Integrated Circuits at Hitachi, Ltd. Their support for the SH7290 will help ensure a wide array of innovative, compelling multimedia applications for mobile phones."
CodeWarrior Development Tools for intent Media Platform is designed to let developers create applications that run on a multitude of media devices through the innovative intent platform from the TAO Group. This includes set-top boxes, PDAs, next-generation handsets, digital cameras and other consumer electronic devices. CodeWarrior Development Tools for intent is the first professional integrated development environment for the intent Media Platform, and provides support for pre-platform applications development, allowing software engineers to create applications before the device is ready. Once hardware engineering is complete, the code base can then be moved to the prototype device. This makes it possible for software and hardware development to go on concurrently, reducing time to market.
"The combination of TAO and Metrowerks is enabling the SH-Mobile processor development community to easily create rich multimedia content and applications for a multitude of media devices with absolute fastest time to market," said Francis Charig, executive chairman at the TAO Group. "CodeWarrior is justifiably the principle tool chain in our market, and it is now being used by blue chip corporations to exploit TAO's best-in-class graphics, audio, streaming and Java and deliver to the market content that meets consumer expectations."
Hosted on Microsoft Windows® NT/2000/XP platforms, the toolset supports C, C++, and TAO Groups proprietary Virtual Processor (VP) assembly language. An upcoming version of the toolset available this summer will add JavaTM language support.
This release of CodeWarrior tools supporting Hitachis SH-Mobile processor provides device manufacturers with the essential toolset for creating the next generation rich-multimedia-capable devices based on TAOs intent Media Platform in combination with the new SH7290," said John Smolucha, vice president of Metrowerks. As the first tools vendor to support the innovative intent platform on the new SH-Mobile series, were excited to be able to help our customers create highly portable multimedia applications for the next generation of mobile handsets."
CodeWarrior Development Tools for intent Media Platform is part of a family of CodeWarrior tools supporting the leading wireless platforms: Palm OS, Symbian OS, Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME), Linux, and Java Card. Metrowerks also provides platform and pre-platform tools supporting ARM®, PowerPC, DSP, and other processors. In addition, Metrowerks provides developers access to its Wireless Development Centers, which feature a 2.5G infrastructure for device and applications testing and certification.
