Sierra Club-Rachel Carson Group supports preservation of the 360-degree view from the crest of Lakewood's Mount Carbon

The executive committee of the Sierra Club-Rachel Carson Group of Jefferson County has given a vote of confidence to the savemountcarbon.com initiative to relocate golf course toilet structures from the top of Mount Carbon in suburban Denver.

(PRWEB) June 9, 2002 - The executive committee of the Sierra Club-Rachel Carson Group of Jefferson County has given a vote of confidence to the savemountcarbon.com initiative.

In a June 4, 2002, e-mail to Lakewood City officials, chairperson Dave Chandler says: "The executive committee of the Sierra Club-Rachel Carson Group of Jefferson County supports the efforts of Steve and Maggie Holben, Lakewood residents, who are leading the initiative to relocate golf course toilet structures from the summit of Mt. Carbon. It would be a shame to spoil the magnificent 360-degree view that now exists from this vantage point. Certainly the facilities could be moved to a less intrusive area while still maintaining accessibility and convenience for golfers, cyclists, hikers, and walkers."

Chandler continues on behalf of the board: "We hope that the City of Lakewood will consider the visual impacts of the current position of the restrooms, make the aesthetically responsible choice --- and relocate the structures to a more appropriate site."

The savemountcarbon.com initiative supports moving golf course toilet structures (almost complete at this writing) off the crest of Mount Carbon. The mountain is located in southwest Metro Denver at Bear Creek dam. The northeast side of the mountain is the future home of the Homestead at Fox Hollow Golf Course. The toilet buildings are part of that project.

Details of what started as Steve Holben's one-man initiative to relocate the toilets from the top of Mt. Carbon to a less obtrusive location can be read in the May 23 Lakewood Sentinel article by LeRoy Standish: http://www.jeffconews.com/n2140yd.html

"Steve and I have enjoyed picnics atop Mt. Carbon for a number of years, delighting in the wonderful 360-degree view of Denver and the Rocky Mountains. We've been shocked that toilet buildings are located directly on top of the mountain.

"As Steve has reiterated many times, the 360-degree view is simply wonderful, and we
believe everyone's needs can be met through cooperation. We plan to be at the June 10th
Lakewood City Council meeting to share details of the savemountcarbon.com initiative with
our city's elected officials," Maggie Holben, savemountcarbon.com spokesperson says.
