Take A "Mystery" Vacation This Summer
Now, instead of planning an itinerary, travelers can choose a budget and travel dates and let a travel agent do the rest. The twist: Travelers don't know the destination until a few days before the trip, but get scintillating clues from the agent in the weeks before.
Salt Lake City, UT. June 12, 2002. It's summer, the time when we pack our bags and head off to places we dream about. Though getting there may be half the fun, guessing where can also be part of the package.
If you love a surprise -- and a good deal -- then Veiled Voyage Tours, a "mystery vacation" travel company, might be your ticket. Veiled Voyage specializes in short – usually three-day - North American getaways for $249 per person and up. But there's a catch: they won't tell you where you're going until just a few days before departure.
When you travel with Veiled Voyage, you provide specific information: travel dates, budget and a theme (romance, shopping, rest & relaxation, golf, fine dining). Veiled Voyage then arranges a mystery vacation while blending in game-show excitement, teasing clients you with clues in the weeks leading up to the trip.
Founder Bruce Smith sold his first "destination unknown" vacation in 1996 to three women in their 60s searching for a weekend getaway with their husbands. It was an instant hit. Today, the excitement is still in the details that lead up to the vacation, which is kept secret until a month before departure.
"I hear stories about people waiting by their mailboxes looking for hints," says Smith. "If I'm late delivering a clue, I hear about it immediately."
Two days prior to departure, clients receive their package, including airline tickets, hotel and car information, coupons and suggestions to make their adventure more memorable.
Smith says his trips are becoming popular as surprise gifts for special occasions and as a unique option for budget travelers and referrals account for 30-40% of his business. "This is a great way to spark a mini-vacation with your family, loved ones, friends and more. If you want to take a group, that's also a good idea," says Smith.
