THALES COMPUTERS INTRODUCES VMPC6d DUAL/SINGLE
G4 PowerPCä 7410 TOP PERFORMING SBC FOR HIGH-END
DATA AND SIGNAL PROCESSING
Raleigh, NC, June 24, 2002 – Thales Computers, a leader in providing PowerPC and Pentiumâ VME computing solutions to OEMs and system integrators, has introduced the VMPC6d, a powerful new dual/single PowerPC single board computer (SBC). The VMPC6d is intended for high-performance data and/or signal processing applications, including sonar, radar, medical imaging and machine vision systems, especially in harsh or demanding environments.
The new VMPC6d features one or two 500 MHz Motorola PowerPC 7410 (G4) chips with the AltiVecä vector processing unit. The new board provides 33% more memory bandwidth, due to the speed of the memory running 8-byte burst transfers at 133 MHz, and lower power dissipation, all at a very competitive price. The outstanding processor/memory throughput provides the ability to fully exploit the maximum computing capabilities of the G4/AltiVec. The VMPC6d is also completely compatible with the earlier board, providing a user-friendly migration pathway.

The performance of the new VMPC6d is enhanced by the ‛Avignon ASIC, a crossbar" companion host bridge running at 133 MHz co-developed by Thales Computers and IBM Corporation. The new board also features one 64 KB L1 cache and one 2 MB L2 cache per processor, in addition to up to 512 MB of SDRAM arranged in a massively shared memory architecture that facilitates real-time memory access with extremely low latency.
The VMPC6d is available with VxWorks® 5.4 and supports Tornado IIä for VxWorks running both single and dual processor modes. VxWorks 5.4 is the fundamental run-time component of the Tornado II embedded development platform and one of the most widely adopted real-time operating systems (RTOS) in the embedded industry. The VMPC6d is also available with LynuxWorks new LynxOSä 4.0, a hard real-time 100% Linux ABI-compatible operating system. In addition, the VMPC6d has been selected as a PowerPC reference platform by LynuxWorks. The complete conformance to open system interfaces provided by LynxOS 4.0 enables OEMs to leverage existing Linux, UNIX, and POSIX programming capabilities for embedded real-time projects.
The state-of-the-art hardware and software features of the VMPC6d make it ideal for vector processing, high-bandwidth data processing, and algorithm-intensive computation for signal processing and other data and signal intensive applications. The VMPC6d is available in two Ruggedizerä equipped models, the air-cooled RA and conduction-cooled RC, to handle harsh environments, in addition to extended temperature and commercial versions.
The new VMPC6d is supplied with Thales Computers PowerLine4Ň toolkit for platform management, which supports LynuxWorks operating systems and helps shorten

development cycles and time-to-market for COTS-based signal processing solutions. Thales Computers can optionally provide COTS hardware and software and dedicated services, including high-performance communication layers, machine development and supervision software, built-in-test, machine integration, acceptance tests, and configuration and technology insertion management.
The VMPC6d is available immediately; pricing for the VMPC6d starts at $5,286.
