Silklantern.com today unveiled the Silklantern Newswire, a service that provides Wheel of Time news content to third party web sites.
The service, which is available for free, allows webmasters to automatically insert the most recent Wheel of Time headlines into their own sites by copying and pasting a single line of HTML code. Webmasters can customise the number and appearance of headlines displayed, and can also use the service to display Silklantern.com discussion topics on their sites.
The newswire is targeted to the Robert Jordan web site community, which boasts the largest number of fan sites dedicated to any other fantasy author alive today. According to a silklantern spokesperson, Most owners of amateur sites dont have the time or money to maintain a full-fledged page of headlines." The newswire is expected to help small site owners retain their audiences and become relevant information sources rather than going stagnant and sending their users abroad for news. Because the newswires insertion code is in HTML only, it can be used on free web hosts such as Geocities, which provide very limited technological capabilities to site owners.
The newswire was developed by Luke Chatburn, who joined the silklantern staff in 1999. The newswire is the first of a series of tools by silklantern aiming to help small site owners build and update their pages.
