HINGHAM MUNICIPAL LIGHT WARNS CHILDREN
NOT TO BE LIKE MIKE"
Young Basketball Player Touches Power Lines in New Movie
DATELINE: HINGHAM, MA, JULY 8, 2002… Hingham Municipal Light Plant (HMLP) strongly warns children not to emulate 15-year old Calvin who attempts to retrieve a pair of sneakers hanging from power lines in Twentieth Century Foxs new movie Like Mike". HMLP cautions children not to go near or touch power lines or anything dangling from power lines because it could result in serious injury or death.
The movie, Like Mike", opening in theaters this week, is a story about a boy, Calvin, who climbs up on a roof to retrieve a pair of sneakers caught on a power line just as the cable is struck by lightning, electrifying both the boy and the sneakers. Calvin turns out to be fine and the electrified shoes now have special powers that grant him Michael Jordans basketball skills whenever he wears them.
According to HMLP, the movie may be viewed as a fictional tale with a deadly twist. In real life, electrified sneakers would not empower anyone, but would be burnt severely. And most likely Calvin would not have recovered at all.
As electrical workers, we take every precaution when we are close to and working with wires and power sources. We wear special protective clothing and equipment and we follow very strict regulations. Under no circumstances should children get close to or touch power lines. It could result in serious injury or death," warns Chris Cox, General Manager of Hingham Municipal Light Plant.
Hingham Municipal Light Plant, providers of electrical power to the town of Hingham, MA operates under the authority of the Town of Hingham and the Hingham Municipal Light Board. The plant has 22 employees and provides power to more than 7,000 Hingham households. Hingham Municipal Light is located at 222 Central Street in Hingham, MA.
