GODDESS HISTORICAL TOUR: ARENAS NO, INSANE ASYLUM YES
On August 2-4,Goddess, NYCs comely good witches of alt.folk, will play a
series of four free outdoor concerts at the sites some of New Yorks most
brutal, violent history. The Hanging Elm in Washington Square, Ladies Mile
shopping/prostitution district, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory building, and
Blackwells Island (which in its heyday featured an orphanage, prison,
‘lunatic asylum AND work house) will be commemorated in this tour of
haunted New York. The tour is capping off with a less-free and more
properly rock indoor show at Tonic, Sunday August 4, opening for Anthony
and the Johnsons.
We sing about urban myths, magical worlds in the city. Goddess belongs on
the street, playing under a tree where necktie parties actually took place."
says keyboardist Yvette Perez. The Tour is about reaching people about the
issues behind these sites, like poverty, labor conditions, the death penalty."
The unconventional nature of this tour is second nature to the band known for
its lyrics about trolls and devils, flowing Gunne Saxx dresses, and
straw-broom percussion. New York is my cauldron, and Im gonna be
casting some healing musical spells all over this town." says horsehair fiddle
and French horn player Tamalyn Miller.
Goddess finds the traditional hell-ladder of music success a tad boring. I
guess I should be out getting my butt waxed like Brittany and all those gals,
but Id rather just play my sick songs about the Green Hook Man, give the
money to a worthy cause, and be left alone." says flower-crowned singer
Heaven (of the former band Double Dong).
A lively, illustrated booklet written by the band that details the significance
of each stop will be available. Goddess will donate funds raised to a
nonprofit organization specific to each issue.
