In celebration of Disability Awareness Month Diversityforhire.com and Equality Staffing are combining forces to produce a Disability Career Expo and Employer Educational Workshops in New York City on Tuesday, November 5th.
Individuals, representing all populations in the disability community, can present their qualifications and abilities to more than an expected 60 employers and thousands of jobs. The Disability Career Expo & Employer Workshop is scheduled to take place at the New Yorker Hotel from 10AM – 5PM with a CEO breakfast at 8:AM. Corporate giants, diversity training and educational companies, government agencies and non-profit organizations will be invited to recruit and present at the expo.
According to Jeff Klare, Equality Stuffings executive director, the Disability Career Expo is the first such career expo targeted to the disability community here in the big apple. This also marks the culmination of disability awareness month and will bring real world attention to hiring people with disabilities.
While the unemployment rate for the general population rises, this also gives disability minded employers time to review their strategies for the next hiring wave. The unemployment rate of working-age individuals with disabilities, both nationally and locally, continues to hover around 70%, even though the vast majorities say they can and want to work.
While it is hard to tell how many of the job seekers will ultimately become employed as the result of the career expo, I am confident that through word of mouth and other advertising we should deliver a good supply of quality candidates for our exhibitors", says James Henry, Co-Producer of the career expo.
I also want the job seekers to know that our employers are not just going through the motions," continued Henry, "We would like employer exhibitors who are really interested in considering disability workers for their positions, that way it really means something for our contingency".
Klare and Henry believe that The Disability Career Expo and educational workshops for employers is an excellent way for employers to become better acquainted with the skills and abilities of America's disability community. Even if they do not hire someone that day, they can literally see that people with disabilities can work, want to work and are only looking for the opportunity to prove themselves in the workplace.
