California Supreme Court Oral Arguments
Broadcast Live Statewide October 8
The California Supreme Court in an unprecedented educational outreach effort, will broadcast the court calendars oral arguments live on public television stations KVIE Channel 6 in Sacramento, KVPT Channel 18 in Fresno, and statewide on The California Channel cable network. This initiative is part of the Courts commitment to the educational value for students and interest to the citizens of California, the cases to presented are of extreme interest to all citizens.
SACRAMENTO, CA, September 30, 2002 — Public television stations KVPT Fresno and KVIE Sacramento, announced today that the Supreme Court of the State of California, Court of Appeal Courtroom for the Fifth Appellate District in Fresno, will broadcast its oral argument calendar in a first-time live telecast on KVIE-6 and KVPT-18 (and statewide on The California Channel) Tuesday, October 8, 2002 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The court is looking forward to holding oral arguments for the first time in Fresno," said Chief Justice Ronald M. George. We especially welcome participation by teachers and students in Californias Central Valley and hope this session will serve as a valuable educational tool concerning our judicial system."
This groundbreaking outreach initiative will allow the public to watch arguments in three major cases before the Court. Central Valley high school students, who prepared for the issues with curriculum packages created for the initiative, will be present to hear the proceedings.
For the first time, the Court will allow students to ask the members of the Court questions during the live broadcast. The question process is designed to allow students to ask questions that interest them and receive a direct response from the Chief Justice and the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court.
ON THE CALENDAR:
In re Rosenkrantz" is a widely watched case involving the Governors authority to review parole decisions. People v. Stanistreet" involves the constitutionality of a law that makes it a misdemeanor to file a knowingly false allegation of misconduct against a peace officer. In re Roberts" involves various issues raised in a habeas corpus petition in a death penalty case.
