More: New Horizons Preschool invites families to honor Dr. King's birthday, commemorating his life, hopes and dreams at a free series of events at the Boulder Public Library on January 20, 2003 beginning at 1:00 pm. All events are free and open to the public.
"Moving Together" is presented by New Horizons Cooperative Preschool and includes entertainment and participatory dance as follows: Kroku African Drumming ensemble @ 1:00 pm, Hugo Sayles dynamic storyteller @ 1:30 pm, Motion Underground HIP-HOP performance at 2:15 pm, and a presentation of WE ARE THE ONES WE ARE WAITING FOR!" by Sirat-al Salim beginning at 3:30 pm.
Other activities include Birthday Cake and refreshments served at 3:00 pm. Ongoing throughout the day participants will enjoy taking part in Talking Stick Building, and a Community Leader Read-Aloud, featuring Boulder community notables reading selected books that have received the Coretta Scott King Award.
The RMPJC will hold a rally and begin construction of the Freedom Banner", which will be publicly displayed and contain signatures and statements of public commitment to Dr. Kings principles during an MLK Day rally to be held on the courthouse lawn from 11-1pm. A procession to the library will follow.
The documentary film "Eyes on the Prize" will be shown in the library throughout the day. Families and small children are welcome and encouraged to attend.
WE ARE THE ONES WE ARE WAITING FOR!" is an inspiring and thought provoking tribute to Dr. Kings lifes work. This performance explores some of the urgent issues facing our communities and in bold and simple words points to the future and proclaims, We are the ones we are waiting for!" This performance seeks to build on the lives, words and wisdom of many elders, strengthening and encouraging our contribution as compassionate leaders of the 21st century.
This event precedes two continuing community services:
New Horizons Cooperative Preschool sponsors a series of educational workshops beginning in January for parents and professionals focusing upon issues related to cultural and developmental diversity. The half-day sessions are held for eight Saturdays and are taught by educational professionals and combine practical hands-on activities with discussions of current research and theory. The Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center will present on ongoing community forum examining the works of Dr. King, and our current social positions in regards to attaining his goals.
