Perforce Software Launches Major New Version Of Its Software Configuration Management System
Addition of the Perforce Proxy benefits geographically distributed development teams
Yateley, UK, 8th January 2003 -- Perforce Software has launched Perforce 2002.2, a major new version of its software configuration management system. Perforce 2002.2 includes a significant enhancement in the form of the Perforce Proxy (P4P), which utilises a new caching technology to better facilitate distributed development.
P4P uses caching technology to help offshore and offsite software developers tackle the challenges posed by restricted or expensive network bandwidth. With P4P, remote users experience significantly quicker response times when downloading versions of files that have already been requested by other remote users. P4P caches file revisions sent from the central server; subsequent requests for that same revision are delivered from the proxy server. This reduces both network traffic across the WAN, and CPU load on the central server.
P4P provides remote developers as well as the central manager a real-time view of project changes across the entire team. P4P is easy to install and requires little administration.
This is particularly relevant in cases where developer productivity is slowed by restricted network bandwidth," said Christopher Seiwald, chief technology officer of Perforce Software. But unlike complicated replication solutions, the Perforce Proxy eliminates the need for repository replication at all because operations occur in real time. And P4P requires very little configuration or management to set up. It practically drops in and disappears."
