Nothing is Impossible, Persistence Always Wins
UXBRIDGE, MA (January 9, 2003) - Each of us has our difficulties to overcome and, at times, we selfishly complain. There are others that remain positive, upbeat, and confident, even while facing the most complex circumstances.
Lauren is an individual who thrives when faced with a challenge and conquers the impossible. She is a remarkable woman who is not only a person with a disability, but also the single mother of a son, 8 years old. She has built an online business from the ground up and is operating it successfully.
Lauren Gayner was born with severe spastic quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. The disability has caused Lauren to struggle with her limbs and has impaired her speech. She has been wheel-chair bound since the age of thirteen. The chair has allowed her to gain the mobility that she otherwise would not have had.
From age nine to seventeen Lauren lived at the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton, Mass., and it was there that she learned most of the skills she enlists in daily life. But it was her natural striving for independence and willpower to live as full a life as possible that led Lauren to branch out on her own. After school I moved right out on my own after graduation. I learned how to hire personal care attendants so they could help me gain the independence I needed to succeed," says Lauren. After moving out on her own, Lauren attended college, taking early child development and computer information system classes. Little did she know that the two would soon come together and give her the needed tools to find success doing something that she loves.
When she was thirty years old, Lauren married and had a baby. My parents, doctors and friends were all leery and so was I," Lauren recalls, but I remember my grandfather told me long ago-that I could do and be anything I wanted to, never let anyone tell me I couldnt." Lauren, once again, defied the odds and showed the skeptics that she could do what she put her mind to. The birth was without complications and the best experience of this young womans life.
Even though, having Matthew was nothing short of a full blown miracle to all of Laurens doctors, raising Matthew is not without its difficulties, including Matthew having and being diagnosed with ADHD and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), Just another challenge in my eyes," says Lauren. Matthew is still and will always be the joy and inspiration in Laurens life. Perhaps its because of her own disabilities that she can see past his problems and see only his smile and laughter, but in either case, even with an extreme disability, Lauren has shown everyone that thought this was impossible, that she is a perfectly capable parent and has gained praise from many for a job well done.
The experience taught the both of them a lot and the loving mother is able to help her son as much as he helps her. Even with all our challenges, it only makes us stronger and more knowledgeable rather than looking at them as obstacles," says the young mother.
Lauren always knew she wanted to be financially independent, as well. With the rise of Internet business and the freedoms web based businesses provide owners and customers alike, Lauren got to thinking. Then she got down to business, her own. Lauren opened an online store, Gayner Gifts (www.gaynergifts.com), in the fall of 2001.
Laurens online business focuses upon selling gifts. Through the Internet, emails, faxes, and catalogues, she is able to manage all aspects of her business, from processing orders, handling electronic checks and credit cards, to corresponding with clients and vendors - even printing out her own stamps. The age of technology has brought about a sense of equality for all people. There are no physical boundaries for people with disabilities. It is a field of opportunity that has been leveled so that all people are given the chance to find their professional niche and success.
Laurens life is a lesson not just to her own son or to others with physical disabilities. It is a lesson to anyone who wants to grow, succeed, and prosper in life. To quote Lauren and her father, Theres no such word as 'cant. Nothings impossible if you want it bad enough."
