TELECOM INDUSTRY REVIEW PREDICTS BETTER TIMES IN 2003
BOONTON, NJ. January 10, 2003: While 2002 was a brutal year for the telecommunications industry filled with bankruptcies, layoffs, and scandal, a new report from Insight Research suggests that the global telecom industry will begin a long, slow climb out of the cellar in 2003. The 2003 Telecom Industry Review: An Anthology of Market Facts and Forecasts examines the underlying reasons for the recent telecommunications industry slump, and highlights rapidly growing industry segments, technological innovations, and implications for profitability and sustained growth for carriers and equipment vendors. According to the study, flawed strategies and false assumptions by major players were primarily to blame for the industrys recent woes.
The malaise of the past few years can be laid at the feet of those companies that followed flawed business strategies based on false assumptions about the magnitude and nature of the changes within the industry," says Insight Research president Robert Rosenberg. The inability to transform capacity growth into actual revenue and mistaken calculations about the growth of network usage led to false assumptions of market sizes," according to Rosenberg. The study found that many companies overestimated the number of new competitors that could thrive in a market, the advantages that scale would impart, and could not find convincing ways to differentiate their products.
