Macrovision Partners with MontaVista Software to Provide Digital Rights Management Support for Linux-Based Consumer Devices

Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), the leading provider of digital rights management ("DRM") technologies, and MontaVista Software, Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, announced today that Macrovision has ported its MacroSafe secure media DRM solution to the MontaVista Linux® OS and both companies are working to support DRM functionality in the newly launched MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition, a new standard development platform for embedded designs that enables developers to create a broad range of consumer devices.

London- January 10, 2003 - Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), the leading provider of digital rights management ("DRM") technologies, and MontaVista Software, Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, announced today that Macrovision has ported its MacroSafe secure media DRM solution to the MontaVista Linux® OS and both companies are working to support DRM functionality in the newly launched MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition, a new standard development platform for embedded designs that enables developers to create a broad range of consumer devices.

MacroSafe is a multi-layered software solution for the secure distribution and management of video, audio, graphics, and other multimedia applications, to a variety of non-PC devices including set-top boxes, PDAs, portable entertainment devices, and digital consumer electronics appliances, in addition to traditional PCs.

"Our partnership with MontaVista Software will facilitate the adoption and implementation of the MacroSafe DRM technology in the embedded systems and consumer electronics markets," said Carol Flaherty, senior vice president of Macrovision's Video Technology Division. "DRM enablement and embedded Linux devices both are becoming increasingly important for the content and technology communities. Our combined solution helps speed up the development of embedded consumer electronics products, lowers development risk, and offers content owners additional secure distribution alternatives."

A recent Venture Development Corporation market research report concluded that consumer electronics is the fastest growing market segment for Linux with an annual growth rate of 49% and projected to reach $149.6 million in shipments by 2006. The report estimated that consumer electronics will be the largest segment of the embedded Linux market by 2006, with over 40% market share.

"We are seeing an enormous surge in the number of consumer electronics products running Linux. In addition, device manufacturers are now proactively implementing DRM to make their products more competitive," said Sheila Baker, vice president, Marketing, MontaVista Software. "We expect the use of embedded Linux in consumer electronics to grow very rapidly and MontaVista will continue to provide value-added solutions, such as DRM enablement through strategic partners such as Macrovision to meet our customers' needs in this market."

About MacroSafe
MacroSafe is a complete security solution for electronic delivery of high value content -
its transparent architecture causes little or no impact to the existing content creation work flow, to the electronic delivery infrastructure, nor to the consumer's viewing experience. And because MacroSafe is based on industry standard, non-proprietary programming languages, interfaces and protocols, it can be quickly and cost-effectively integrated into embedded devices, consumer electronic set-tops, and into an existing e-commerce and delivery system.

Macrovision will be demonstrating its MacroSafe DRM for Linux-based set-top application from January 9-12, 2003 during the CES 2003 event. The demonstrations are held at the Embassy Suites Convention Center, 3600 Paradise Road, Las Vegas. For demonstration appointment during CES 2003, please contact Joseph Alfonso at (408) 421-7169 or jalfonso@macrovision.com. MontaVista Software will be demonstrating a range of cutting-edge end-user Consumer Devices built on MontaVista Linux at CES in Booth #35179 in the Embedded Technologies Pavilion, Las Vegas Convention Center at CES.

About MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition
MontaVista Linux® Consumer Electronics Edition 3.0 (CEE) is the first Linux operating system and cross-development environment specifically designed for consumer electronics applications such as mobile phones, digital televisions, set-top boxes and automotive telematics. CEE enhances Linux with dynamic power management, rich consumer-focused networking support and consumer-grade reliability. CEE targets consumer device specific CPUs such as the Texas Instruments OMAP 1510/5910 Innovator and the IBM PowerPC 405 LP, with others to follow. It forms the foundation of solution stacks from software partners in key vertical mobile, home and automotive markets. CEE is tailored to the demands of highly constrained mobile devices, which require low power consumption, restricted memory size and short boot and resume times. CEE 3.0 incorporates file system enhancements and new tools to measure performance, system timing and memory size. MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition supports XIP (eXecute In Place) of the kernel and applications as well as streaming media optimizations. It integrates with consumer market middleware such as the J2ME compatible WebSphere Micro Environment from IBM, and graphics packages such as QT/E from Trolltech and MontaVista Graphics.
