Six-Week Course To Bring Top Speakers From Music, Media, Internet Industries

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Journalism, Public Relations and Fundraising Department of UCLA Extension will offer for the 16th consecutive year its comprehensive "Publicity in the Music Industry" class to be taught by veteran music PR executive Cary Baker. Baker will instruct an all-day "introduction" to music publicity on Saturday, January 25, 2003, from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., followed by six consecutive close-up sessions on subsequent Tuesday nights from January 28 until March 4 (7 - 10 p.m.) The course will be held at UCLAs Lindbrook Center (10920 Lindbrook Dr. in Los Angeles Westwood Village.) Once an ancillary function of the music industry, publicity now plays an aggressive front-line role as creating and maintaining the right image and point-of-view have become central to a recording artists career development.

The one-day music publicity seminar on January 25 will briefly survey the elements and processes of a successful publicity campaign. The class features guest speakers from all sectors of the media and the music industry.

The six three-hour Tuesday evening sessions (January 28 - March 4), which complement the one-day seminar, explore in depth many music publicity elements, including writing effective press releases and bios, publicity plans and projections, implementing the campaign, the importance of organized follow-up, creating a profile on tour, how to build and maintain a buzz, music on TV, when to say no to exposure, the crucial role of the Internet in publicity and how it has expanded the publicists role, breaking a news story, planning receptions, producing electronic press kits, assigning photography, niche publicity, the mindset of publicity and how to deal with rejection and comparisons on working in-house vs. out of your own house. Implementing the principles learned to practice, students will write an artist bio with the opportunity to interview a featured guest recording artist to be announced shortly.

He is a member of Entertainment Publicity Professional Society (EPPS) and the Music Industry Executive Steering Committee for City of Hope.
