Report helps to make a better business case for workflow

An independent report to help organisations grasp the full significance of the business case for workflow systems, has been published by independent consultants, Lilley Information Systems.

An independent report to help organisations grasp the full significance of the business case for workflow systems, has been published by independent consultants, Lilley Information Systems.

Workflow software automates complete business processes, both across and up the
organisation, rather than islands of data processing. Properly designed and managed, such processes can make the organisation more reliable, effective and efficient, enabling it to attract more income and drive down costs.

'With the economy in recession and some previous projects failing to deliver, senior management are looking to increase business performance and demanding a more rigorous business case. Coupled with the widespread lack of appreciation of the technology, and the general problem that staff have in producing a convincing business case for workflow, there is a need for help in this area,' said the author Vic Lilley.

Updated for the 2003 edition, The Business Case for Workflow report is aimed at business people, with the technical aspects kept to a minimum. The idea being that anyone involved in the project can understand it. Apart from helping to produce a winning business case, the report can also be used as a communication device. For example, an IT Director can use it to save time and bridge the 'boardroom communication gap,' or a Managing Director might take the initiative, get the report and understand the potential for workflow directly. A new
section has been added called Strategic Benefits, that organises benefits by strategic objectives. This helps to address a general complaint about systems, of them not aligning to organisational strategy.

The report had already embraced the concept of Business Process Management (BPM) with enterprise-wide business process integration, and integration with other organisations external to the enterprise, such as customers, suppliers, home/mobile workers and regulatory bodies. However, additional information on BPM, in the Related Technology and Ideas section, puts workflow and BPM in context. The same applies to Web Services..

Designed for a quick read, it has 37 pages and costs 120. A brochure and order form are at http://www.lilleyinfosys.co.uk/the-business-case-for-workflow-report.html or telephone +44 (0)20 8573 3911. Backup consultancy and training services are also available.
