UN Chronicle E-Alert: OF MIGRATION AND GLOBAL TRADE
The Chairmanship of the http://www.g77.org">Group of 77 , the coalition of 133 developing
countries, was handed over by Venezuela to Morocco at a ceremony
at United Nations Headquarters yesterday. http://www.un.org/apps/sg/sgstats.asp?nid=229">Speaking on the occasion,
Secretary-General Kofi Annan highlighted the challenges the G-77 will
face in the coming year, including the need to deal with trade-related
intellectual property rights while allowing developing countries to have
access to life-saving medicines, an issue which has led to difficulties in
multilateral trade negotiations following the 2001 Doha agreement. He
also urged developing nations to pay greater attention to protecting
the human rights of migrants and for both developing and developed
countries to realize fully the potential of international migration.
The UN Chronicle has in the past highlighted the issue of migration,
including immigration and the refugee problem, and also the question
of access to life-saving medicines. Some of these articles are presented below:
