SUN MICROSYSTEMS SURGES AHEAD WITH A COMMANDING LEAD IN THE RISC/UNIX SERVER MARKET IN INDIA

Sun cements its market leadership position in the RISC/UNIX server market with key wins in the telecom and finance segment

Singapore - 17 January, 2003 - Sun Microsystems, Asia South today announced
that it has increased its revenue market share in the RISC/UNIX server
market in India in Q3 2002 compared to Q2 2002 by almost 19 percentage
points, according to IDC's (International Data Corporation) Q3 2002
Enterprise Server Tracker Report. In Q3 2002, Sun's revenue market share
was more than the combined market shares of its two closest competitors.
Sun's RISC/UNIX server revenue market share in India grew to 62.8 percent
in Q3 2002 compared to 32.7 percent in Q3 2001. Sun's unit shipment market
share in the RISC/UNIX segment was an impressive 66.8 percent, recording a
growth of more than 9 percentage points over Q2 2002.

In the same IDC report, Sun was also reflected as the dominant vendor in
the mid-range and entry-level RISC/UNIX server segments, both in unit
shipment and revenue terms in Q3 2002.

"A stellar performance given the highly competitive nature of the server
market in India," said Rajnish Arora, Senior Program Manager, Enterprise
Servers & Workstations, IDC Asia/Pacific. "Sun's success primarily stemmed
from its strong focus on the burgeoning opportunities in the telecom and
finance segment apart from effective channel management."

"These are challenging times and it is no small feat for Sun to emerge with
such impressive results," said Bhaskar Pramanik, Managing Director, India,
Sun Microsystems. "We achieved many significant wins in the telco and
finance industries. Enterprises in India have chosen Sun as their
preferred Unix server vendor. Moving ahead, we will continue to provide
our customers with IT architectures that ensure efficiency, lower total
cost of ownership and greater return on investment. Basically, IT
solutions that address business issues."

The number one position achieved by Sun in the RISC/UNIX server market in
India reflects the lead held by it in the ASEAN & India RISC/UNIX server
market, according to IDC's Q3 2002 Enterprise Server Tracker Report. Top
corporations in India that have chosen Sun include ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank,
Bharti and Karnataka Bank to name a few.
