Macrovision Releases Second Generation Java Version of FLEXlm®

De Facto Standard in Electronic Licensing Technology Enables Java and Linux Software Developers To Deliver Next Generation Software Business Models

LONDON, England - January 22, 2002 -Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), the world leader in electronic license management, digital rights management ("DRM") and copy protection technologies, today announced the upcoming release of FLEXlm® Version 9.0. With an object oriented client API that is 100 percent pure Java. FLEXlm 9.0 addresses a key requirement in the enterprise software industry: a fully featured, flexible, and proven electronic licensing solution for the Java development environment. As the world's de facto standard in electronic licensing, FLEXlm reduces unlicensed software use and enables software vendors to offer more creative licensing options and evaluation programs.

"Java technology has become increasingly important in enterprise IT systems as a development and deployment platform for the Web," said Steve McHale, vice president of research, Software Partnering and Alliances at International Data Corporation ("IDC"). "With FLEXlm 9.0, independent software vendors ("ISVs") and enterprises get the ability to apply Java technology to the delivery and management of software assets. This should help ISVs create new and more compelling business models, while customers can improve productivity and better manage their software."

What's New

FLEXlm 9.0 eliminates a major limitation of Java applications. Now Java applications can enjoy the same breadth of pricing and licensing models enjoyed by traditional applications. To support the growth in enterprise Web application development and the needs of Java developers, enterprise IT, and software vendors, FLEXlm 9.0 allows software developers to specify customer usage rights for any type of software and software delivery method. New features in FLEXlm Java Version 9 include:

-   Over 1000 Licensing Models: Enables increased flexibility in pricing and packaging enterprise software products with a rich set of software pricing models including usage-based pricing and software-as-a-service delivery.
-   Electronic Tracking and Enforcement: Detailed usage tracking enables ISV's and corporate end-users to avoid costly and time-consuming audits.
-   Enterprise license management solution for Java and Linux: Complete license lifecycle can be managed through a combination of client-side embedded functions and communication with a license server.

"As a leader in digital rights management, we are committed to providing the world's most advanced electronic licensing management solutions to support virtually any development platform," said Daniel Greenberg, vice president of marketing at Macrovision's Enterprise Software Division. "FLEXlm 9.0 offers substantial gains in productivity and flexibility to both ISVs and corporate end-users. With this new release, Java developers can easily manage software licensing and distribution policies while also opening the door to new revenue opportunities and significant increases in profitability."
