Location-based e-government solution hits the spot for local authorities
MapInfo and GDC support local authorities in e-Government
MapInfo Corporation (PRWEB) January 29, 2003 -government initiative with the announcement of GDC's 11th installation of PlanWeb, the company's web mapping software built on MapInfo's Internet mapping server, MapXtreme. PlanWeb has been developed by GDC specifically for local authorities and is part of the GDC GeoPlatform for local e-government.
PlanWeb is a high functionality web-based Geographic Information System (GIS), based upon MapInfo MapXtreme. It enables local authorities to manage all their location specific information and to share this internally and with the community. The solution can be configured to meet differing user requirements providing simple visualisation of location based information on maps on the one hand, with features such as data capture and editing, spatial analysis and plotting for professional users. With the release of the Microsoft .NET version of MapXtreme this year, PlanWeb will also become a full .NET web service.
GDC estimates that the number of local authorities using PlanWeb will more than double in 2003 as local authorities extend their e-government deployments.
Mark Gunn, Director of Product Management & Marketing, at MapInfo explains, 'The e-government initiative puts pressure on local authorities to put services online and accessible to the citizen. In turn this necessitates improved information sharing between departments and joint working with other agencies. PlanWeb helps to make these challenges a reality. With partners like GDC and a very extensive range of applications, we are committed to helping local authorities to deliver on e-government strategy."
Steven Feldman, Managing Director of GDC says, "PlanWeb has been developed following consultations with Local Government and is designed to enable local authorities to deliver Joined-Up Local e-government."
Feldman added, "Joined-Up Local e-government requires the sharing of essential data between departments, something that has been a challenge for authorities. However, we believe that once an effective platform for data-sharing is in place, data can be made available across the organisation without concerns over security or data currency."
Local authorities using PlanWeb include the London Boroughs of Camden and Ealing, Halton Borough Council in Cheshire and South Cambridgeshire District Council. The most recent installation is at Dorset County Council, and a further three local authority installations are already scheduled for early 2003.
