Genuine Imitation Gallery, Portlands newest addition to the pool of talent at Everett Station Lofts, is pleased to announce its second First Thursday opening, 6 February 2003. Following on the heels of the gallerys successful January premiere, Februarys First Thursday will feature the sensory artwork of Portland-based artist Andrew Jones (see artist statement below), accompanied by the turntabilism of Dr. Mo.
Artist/Producer Mo is also host of the popular KPSU radio program, The Downstairs with Dr. Mo. The dexterous DJ will be presenting an exclusive one-night-only unique 80s-heavy remix for the occasion.
Owned by Portland graphic designer, Vincent Clervi, the 1-month old Genuine Imitation Gallerys mission is to showcase a mixture of up-and-coming and established artists from Portland and beyond. Each First Thursday will serve up tasty portions of art, music, and interaction. Not merely a place to quietly file past the artwork that lines the walls, the Genuine Imitation Gallery openings are a social event within themselves, attracting a network of Portland creatives, from music to production to design. The gallery operates as an extension of his independent graphic design firm, Genuine Imitation Design.

Artist statement:
For the past three years, Andrew Jones has been painting what he calls Primitives. These figures are not primitive in their historical or cultural sense, but rather physical representations of basic human emotions--sadness, joy, hysteria, confusion, envy, or sometimes a mixture of all. The figures are neither wholly human nor alien, male or female. They are rather, intended to be physical manifestations of the most basic and/or primal elements of the human psyche.
Jones uses basic, bright color schemes and sparse backgrounds to further indicate his intent. His painting style is spontaneous, simple and intense, rather than deliberate and highly detailed, much like the way the range of emotions might run through a person's mind.
Genuine Imitation upcoming events:
