Western Canada Has An Online News Source
For Outdoors Enthusiasts
Announcement about the Western Canadian Online Outdoors News. Providing information and Resources about western Canada's outdoors. Our URL is westcanoon.com
As the site's slogan states, we will be "Providing Western Canadians With Information & Resources...About Our Outdoors".
Originally established as the Alberta Online Outdoors News, the site had free listings of non-profit Alberta clubs/associations activities, feature articles from Alberta outdoor clubs/associations, articles about Alberta outdoor activities, "Ya'Gotta" submissions from our readers, resources for outdoor enthusiasts, and environmental and conservation resources.
The original Alberta Online Outdoors News met with such excellent support that Bob Kenyon (Publisher and Editor) decided to:
Expand the service to other western Canadian provinces and territories
Rename the site the Western Canadian Online Outdoors News
Establish an official domain name www.westcanoon.com for the site
The site began as an outdoors page, on Bob's personal website, comprised mainly of website links. He decided that it would be good if he could also include news and event announcements. As stated in the "About" section of the site..."One of our strategies, with this zine is the obvious...Unlike print media, we don't use paper (ergo: less waste). Also, with our plain "newspaper" black on white appearance, we're keeping this site as simple as possible. This way it loads quickly (ergo: uses less power). So don't expect glitzy introductions, graphics, linked applications, etc." Bob hopes to include more photographs on the site, especially some of his backpacking photos that he paid for with his sore feet.
Western Canadian non-profit outdoor related organizations, parks, environmental groups, educational institutes and government departments are welcome to send their plain text event announcements to the Western Canadian Online Outdoors News. Boding outdoors writers are also welcome to submit articles, and book reviews, to the site.
With Bob's appreciation of the outdoors, the site is currently operated as a labour of love. He would eventually like to help pay for his efforts by including "outdoors appropriate" fee-for-service banners and a directory of related commercial services. Bob vows that "the site will never have any of those annoying pop-up ads, that we all dislike so much!"
