The War on Terrors Dirty Laundry
US servicemen in and around Afghanistan have come up with an interesting, low-tech solution to their laundry problems. Many are using a compact, portable, lightweight washing machine called the Wonderwash, which washes a five pound load clean in only 1-2 minutes using very little water and detergent and no electricity.
The Wonderwash is ideal for the rugged living conditions found in places such as Afghanistan. It weighs less than six pounds and is highly durable, made out of thick plastic with no moving parts or maintenance required. According to Mark A. Doyle, a US serviceman who recently served in Afghanistan, It definitely helps with the dust and dirt that we are dealing with." Some servicemen and women have hired locals to do their laundry, however in many cases the clothes come back smelling badly and/or damaged- that is, if they come back at all. The mother of one US servicewoman recounts how her daughter ended up in tears" when her favorite clothes were returned to her smelling so badly that she nearly vomited. The washer uses a unique pressure system whereby hot or warm water creates hot air pressure inside the sealed drum and significantly speeds up wash times.
According to Corey Tournet, a leading laundry expert, Since the beginning of the year, there has been a sudden surge in demand for this product among servicemen deployed in Afghanistan."
