Data Sharing Continues to Gain Appeal as Law Enforcement Agencies Realize the Need to
Share Information Across Jurisdictions
GREENSBORO, NC (PRWEB) February 13, 2003 -- Over two years ago, seven North Carolina Police Departments teamed together to cast a wider net in the search for crime fighting information. What began as an innovative project to allow the agencies to share information is now gaining appeal across the state.
When the project began, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, Lexington, Kernersville, Thomasville, and Archdale Police Departments realized the need to share information from each agencys records management system (RMS). With the help of a Greensboro company, Open Software Solutions, Inc. (OSSI), the departments went live in February 2001 with OSSIs P2P (Police to Police) data sharing solution.
Since going live with the project, departments across the state began to realize the benefits of the data sharing initiative that was taking place in the Triad. Now, just two years after implementing OSSIs P2P data sharing solution, nearly 30 law enforcement agencies are sharing critical information online.
The project has also gained appeal from other public safety software companies. Southern Software, Inc., a North Carolina based software company, has partnered with OSSI in a joint effort to enable data sharing among law enforcement agencies. This commitment to data sharing marks both companies vision of sharing data across jurisdictions.
OSSIs P2P solution uses the internet as a communication infrastructure to enable information sharing while avoiding the problems that have undermined past attempts to share data among law enforcement agencies. Although each participant can view the most current information from each participating agencys RMS, the agency that owns" the data retains complete control of their system and database. Database records are never exported to another system and no agency ever has a direct connection to any other agencys database. Each agencys autonomy, system security, and database integrity are protected by the P2P solution.
