The company's website said the idea of the game is to fly a plane up through different selected courses, eliminating all the enemies you encounter along the way, trying to avoid hitting the canyon walls. Users try to wipe out bridges, which are significant to the enemy, but the river is heavily guarded.

According to www.HandyMasters.com, River Raider 2003 includes new levels but keeps with the original game's spirit. The company said the original game, created by Carol Shaw and improved by Activision, was the first ever vertically scrolling game.
