World premiere of two GSM/GPRS mobile phones based on Motorola i.250 chipset
At the GSM Congress 2003 to be held in Cannes on 17--21 February, RTX Telecom will be showing the results of the first production-ready models.
Noerresundby, 17 February 2003: At the GSM Congress 2003 to be held in Cannes on 17--21 February, RTX Telecom will be showing the results of the first production-ready models.
There are two models available, for use in business and consumer phones, respectively. The business model is a bar type and the model for the consumer market is a dual-folder type phone. Both are production-ready and weigh less than 90 grams. Customers can choose from a range of pre-defined handset designs and then add their own particular brand name. This enables them to bring a mobile phone to market within as little as 4--6 months.
Continuous analysis
The two models are a result of the continuous analysis of market expectations and operator requirements. Such analysis revealed that the business segment needed a bar-type design with focus on communication facilities such as data, fax, e-mail and Bluetooth. Other important requirements for the business segment included a scheduler, GPRS, v-card and v-calendar. The analysis of consumer requirements, on the other hand, showed a move towards a dual-folder design, with less interest in communication technologies, but with requirements for a vibrator, colour display and a good MMI.
These different sets of requirements resulted in two different handset designs. A wide range of optional add-ons is also available, including camera, MP3, WLAN and speech recognition.
The analysis also revealed that there is very little brand-loyalty from the users, so there will be a market for these phones, also without one of the famous cellular brand manufactures. This is backed up by recent surveys from In-Stat/MDR.
"Nokia and Ericsson currently dominate the handset market. However, our research shows that business users don't care as much about name brand as they do about features. With a focus on providing handsets with the features that users want, companies like RTX Telecom have the potential to shake up the handset market in the next few years, distributing market share among many more players than exist today." Says Rebecca Diercks from In-Stat/MDR.
The handsets are based on the Motorola i.250 platform (chipset and protocol stack), one of the most well-proven and competitive GSM/GPRS engines currently on the market, to ensure that we can provide customers with the best solution possible.
These handsets are right up to date. They feature an excellent mechanical design and include all the latest cutting-edge technology," says Mr Joergen Elbaek, managing director of RTX Telecom. The handsets are based on the best chip on the market -- from Motorola and with mechanical design from vertical, we can now present one of the most promising mobile phone designs on the market".
