DALET® HELPS FUTURE JOURNALISTS TELL THEIR STORIES

Washington and Lee University Build All Digital Newsroom with DaletPlus News Suite

Paris, France - February 19, 2003 - Dalet Digital Media Systems, a leading provider of media management tools, today announced the installation of the DaletPlus News Suite at Washington and Lee Universitys School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The universitys faculty chose DaletPlus News Suite for its integrated multimedia production toolset and digitally converged environment. DaletPlus News Suite enables radio and TV journalists to browse incoming wire feeds, write stories, build rundowns as well as edit audio and video packages. Its built-in newsroom workflow and media asset management capabilities effectively control the entire broadcast operations.

The news of what we are doing is already starting to reverberate through the journalism education community," exclaims Professor Brian Richardson. The implementation of the DaletPlus News Suite solution has created considerable buzz among various other Journalism schools, envious of Washington and Lees unique capabilities to provide a journalism education that prepares students with real world media production experience."

What Washington and Lee wanted to accomplish had never been done before -- a truly seamless integration of multiple forms of news -- television, print and Internet. Student journalists can share all media resources using one software platform and production toolset," comments Tom Atkins of TGS, systems integrator for Washington and Lee. We looked at a dozen options, but nothing came close. Dalet was the obvious choice."

Washington and Lee was clear from the outset that they wanted an environment where students could focus on the content of their journalism, while learning the most modern production tools," comments Anna Mae Sokusky, president Dalet Digital Media Systems US. They are very conscious that they are training the next generation of journalists and they want them to experience the latest technologies. The DaletPlus News Suite provides the platform and the tools to accomplish that end."

An end to end newsroom solution, the DaletPlus News Suite empowers the student journalists by delivering to their desktops - over a standard IT network -- real time access and editing of video, audio, wires, stills, feeds and CGs. The central storage module supports a wide range of media types allowing students to quickly share story materials and collaborate in ways not possible with traditional newsroom systems. The integrated production and scheduling modules reduce time and streamline operations. Status, approvals and notification tools are also built-in. The student news directors and producers can monitor stories from planning to broadcast.

Both the student journalist and faculty find the DaletPlus News Suite tools very intuitive and easy-to-use. The ease of preparing a story for broadcast has allowed them to have more time to consider content, credibility, and accuracy using the most appropriate medium.

This year I can walk in with my video camera after Ive done all of my interviews, sit down at the computer, write my script, ingest my video via FireWire, edit, add titles, and drag and drop to our server for broadcast later that day," said Kevin Cotlove, Washington and Lee University student journalist.

Journalism students will leave Washington and Lee not only with enhanced media production skills, but the fundamental notion that when writing stories for any medium -- broadcast, print, or Web -- the technology itself will not be an obstacle. With DaletPlus News Suite, the transparency and ease-of-use of the software allows them to focus on the creative part of journalism -- producing the highest quality product.
