The company founder, Richard Sherman with his partners Ray Ferrara and Barbara Nichols designed and created data warehouses at Digital Equipment Corporation starting in the late 1980s, before the term data warehouse had even been coined. Both Sherman and Ferrara went on to careers in Big Five firms, with Sherman leading a data warehousing practice for PriceWaterhouse Coopers and Ferrara leading a data warehouse and e-commerce practice for KPMG. Both are published authors of data warehouse articles and speakers at industry conferences. Barbara Nichols founded Dovetail Software, which was later sold to Ascential Software of Westboro, MA. Earlier in her career at Digital, Nichols founded the Data Management Program, producing the company's first Engineering Standard for meta data. Nichols has presented frequently with Bill Inmon, who is commonly known as the "father of data warehousing."
