World Premiere of Mary Lou Newmark's Concerto for Electric Violin and Orchestra March 15 and 16

Award winning electric violinist and composer Mary Lou Newmark to perform solo with full orchestra at Montpelier, Vermont, Saturday March 15, and Sunday March 16, 2003. This project is supported in part through Subito, the quick advancement grant program of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Composers Forum.

Award winning electric violinist and composer Mary Lou Newmark will premiere as soloist her latest commissioned work, "Canto de Luz - Song of Light" a Concerto for Electric Violin and Orchestra with the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Catherine Orr. This unique commission by the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra represents the first time a West Coast composer has written for this outstanding ensemble and the first time this orchestra has performed with an electric instrument as soloist. There exist very few concertos written for performance by an electric instrument with a full traditional orchestra.

Ms. Newmark has a classical background with undergraduate and graduate degrees in violin performance from Southern Methodist University and the University of Southern California, and a master's degree in composition from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has received numerous awards for her talent as a performer and composer, including annual ASCAP awards, grants from the American Composers Forum and Mu Phi Epsilon, recognition in the Luigi Russolo Competition for electronic music and a residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in 2002.

CONCERT INFO: Saturday, March 15 at 8:00 P.M. and Sunday, March 16, at 4:00 P.M. Both concerts will be held at the Montpelier City Hall Arts Center in Montpelier, Vermont. Tickets are $12 and $10 for seniors and students, available at the box office.
