db3 Broadband is a Lake County, IL company launching Wireless, Mobile, Broadband Internet Access for the county. This service will cover most of the county by 2004 and is for people in 40-50% of the county that cannot get DSL and/or Cable Broadband.

db3 Broadband, LLC, a locally owned and operated company, has announced that they are currently signing up customers in downtown Waukegan. This service will be rolled out for residential and business customers in Lake County throughout 2003. db3 Broadband is using a wireless network to bring Internet access the last mile to the customer. This is the next generation in Internet connectivity because it allows the network to be balanced over the air. Customer packages can be upgraded with the push of a button at the company Network Operations Center.

With the typical DSL and Cable connection now available in some parts of the county, if everyone gets online at the same time the speeds can be slowed to a crawl. “db3 Broadband’s network is wireless, so we can shift bandwidth to concentrated areas automatically through our mesh network of towers to the area in need of additional bandwidth” says Chief Technology Officer Tim DeBruler. This allows db3 to offer guaranteed minimum speeds to its customers.

High speed Internet access, otherwise know as Broadband, is defined as speeds over 256kbps. The standard dial-up service into most households and businesses averages 24-56kbps. The db3 Broadband service offers 128kbps to 4,000kbps. This is anywhere from 4 – 140 times faster than dialup. This wireless solution can reach most homes and businesses by installing a small 3” x 11”, 1lb antenna in a window or on an eve or rooftop. “We have deployed our first tower that covers a 2 mile radius from the center of Waukegan. We can even reach out to high elevations as far as 10 miles with additional gear.” states db3 Vice-President of Sales, Dan Belmont.

db3’s introductory package is $29.95 per month. With a 2 year contract the installation fee is another $10.00 per month. For as little as $39.95 per month you can have a connection that is 4 times faster than dialup, is always on and does not require a second phone line. The rational is that an unlimited Internet account from MSN or AOL is about $20.00 per month and second phone line cost $25-30.00 per month. db3’s General Manager, Andy DeBruler notes, “That is a total of $45-$50 per month for dial-up, making the total cost of $39.95 for a db3 account less expensive, faster and affordable to almost everyone who uses the Internet.”

db3 Broadband has formed a partnership with two leaders in this field to provide this wireless infrastructure to Lake County, IL. Xtratyme Technologies, Inc. is one of the largest WISPs in the country and has been in wireless Internet provisioning since the industry started to exist just 4 years ago. db3’s infrastructure technology incorporates the Motorola’s Canopy® product, which is one of the more robust, simple to install and cost effective equipment packages available.

This local company was formed due to the lack of service and response to the community from the local Telephone Company and Cable Company to fill the demand for high speed internet connections. “Almost 50% of the geography of the county has no other internet connection option other than dialup. With projections that 70-80% of the internet connections will be broadband by 2005, Lake County must have a solution like ours to stay a leader in services offered for residents and businesses” states db3 Broadband CEO Bill DeBruler.
