NSD Deployed on k.root-servers.net
(AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands 26 February 2003) The Réseaux IP Européens Network Co-ordination Centre (RIPE NCC), Amsterdam, in co-operation with NLnet Labs, Amsterdam, has announced the deployment of NSD (Name Server Daemon) to k.root-servers.net, one of the thirteen servers that provide worldwide address translation for the root of the Domain Name System (DNS) network, as of 19 February 2003.
NSD is an authoritative-only, high-performance open source name server software developed by NLnet Labs in co-operation with the RIPE NCC. The implementation is an alternative to the use of BIND, a widely used DNS server software.
The DNS root name servers are given the designations ÂAÂ through ÂMÂ. The ÂKÂ root server is operated by the RIPE NCC at the London Internet Exchange (LINX).
ÂThe change was designed to increase the diversity of software in the root name server system, the lack of which is widely considered to be a potential vulnerabilityÂ, said Daniel Karrenberg, Chief Scientist at the RIPE NCC. ÂThe NSD software has been designed from scratch specifically as an authoritative name server.Â
NSD has no design commonalties with BIND. Additionally, NSD provides a significant increase in the performance reserve of k.root-servers.net.
About RIPE NCC (RIPE Network Co-ordination Centre):
The RIPE Network Co-ordination Centre (RIPE NCC) is one of four Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) providing IP address allocation and registration services that support the operation of the Internet globally.
The services provided ensure the fair distribution of global Internet resources in the RIPE NCC service region required for the stable and reliable operation of the Internet.
The RIPE NCC performs activities for the benefit of its membership; primarily activities that its members need to organise as a group, even though they may compete in other areas. The membership is primarily comprised of Internet Service Providers (ISP) and its service region incorporates Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and African countries located north of the equator.
About NLnet Labs:
NLnet Labs was founded on 1 January 2000 by foundation NLnet. NLnet supports a wide range of projects and activities, varying from software development and scientific research to information dissemination in the form of workshops, conferences and exchange programs.
The foundation ÂStichting NLnet stimulates network research and development in the domain of Internet technology. NLnet does not directly benefit from the undertaken projects, and all developments are published as Open Source.
