THE DIGITAL EXPLORATION SOCIETY LAUNCHES THREE DIGITAL EXPEDITIONS DURING THE L. A. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FAIR

Students and teachers demonstrate the educational possibilities of the new generation of mobile media and communications tools.

ARCADIA, CA -- On Saturday, March 8, 2003, during the 23rd Annual Los Angeles Environmental Education Fair (LAEEF) at the Los Angeles County Botanic Garden, The Digital Exploration Society (www.digitalexplorers.org) and the Wildwoods Foundation (www.wildwoodsfoundation.org) will launch three digital expeditions to demonstrate the exciting potential of digital exploration, mobile communication and outdoor learning.

Open to students and teachers of all ages, participants will have the unique opportunity to become 21st century Digital Explorers". Equipped with Pen Tablet computers, digital cameras, GPS navigation units, voice recorders solar chargers and other digital gear, the students will explore the grounds of the L.A. County Botanic Garden as if they were the first people ever to set foot in the area. Each DEXpedition will spend one hour exploring, mapping and photographing the arboretum grounds.

The Digital Explorers will enjoy using the state-of-the art technology to seek out and identify:
•   Geographic features
•   Botanical specimens and ecosystems
•   Wildlife (including bipeds of various ages and sizes)
•   History (e.g. the Queen Anne Cottage, the Hugo Reid Adobe)

From the field, the students will send their discoveries back to civilization" using wireless communications technology. Their discoveries will be displayed using a video projector at the DEX booth in the main exhibition hall.

Since 1998, the Digital Exploration Society (DEX) has been dedicated to fostering a better understanding of the interdependence between people, the planet we inhabit and the technologies we create. DEX launches, supports and equips students and teachers nationwide as they pioneer the beneficial possibilities of the emerging technology-enabled mobile lifestyle.
