Mirella Creates a New View of Interactive Information Visualization

Not your father's pie chart: Re-inventing the role of information visualization in large scale, complex business decisions.

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) March 8, 2003 -- Mirella, an IT consulting and application development company providing specialized decision support and business process services, is re-inventing the role of information visualization in large scale, complex business decisions.

Traditionally, information visualization refers specifically to information presented in a graphical manner to assist in the analysis and interpretation of data. It began as a method of finding something". Mirella is pushing the envelop of information visualization by turning static graphics into an interactive decision-making tool.

This unique realm requires not just artistic skill but the ability to create a living environment where people can interact with the data for analysis and discovery. Mirella believes that static information is more useful when it becomes interactive; enabling users to move beyond finding something" to doing something with what they find."

In describing Interactive Information Visualization, Mirellas Technology Strategist Hai Ng says, While providing a picture for analysis and discovery, Interactive Information Visualization is primarily designed to provoke thought. The purpose is not just to present the data but also to encourage people to interact with it-to ask, 'What else can I do with this?" This enables people to actually work with their information; they are able to change variables to instantly see the impact on the end result."

Using this technique, Mirella recently developed a powerful predictive modeling tool for pharmaceutical portfolio managers, which enables them to manipulate multiple parameters to determine the best mix of products for commercialization. For the first time, managers can change important variables, such as cost over time or expected net profits to see the impact of their decisions-immediately.

Another custom information visual application developed by Mirella is a hand-held electronic trading tool for Goldman Sachs brokers at the NYSE, which organizes incoming orders and allows the brokers to handle them electronically-a huge productivity boost. Under the old pen and paper system, the brokerage house was unable to process any additional orders.

The handheld tool enabled brokers to increase orders by approximate 33% without adding any additional personnel (which was impossible given space and capacity restrictions at the Stock Exchange). Because the screen design was so similar to the way the brokers organized their handwritten notes, the new tool was not a drastic shift in their thinking or workflow. However, because it was much faster and more efficient it allowed them to fill orders faster and more accurately than before.

Mirella was also part of an international team commissioned to imagine the workplace of the future. Together with furniture maker Haworth and Optika Studios, Mirella developed an interactive office system that married visual workflow tools with an intuitive storage and retrieval system. This international exhibition further solidified Mirellas position as a leader in emerging technology.
