TiVo Alternative for the PC SageTV Brings First-of-its-Kind Intelligent Television Recording to PC Users

SageTV Brings First-of-its-Kind Intelligent Television Recording to PC Users

Chicago, March 6, 2003 -- SageTV, a new PC-based Personal Video Recorder (PVR) from Chicago-based Frey Technologies, LLC, a forerunner in the PVR industry, is being released today in 25 major U.S. television viewing markets.* SageTV is an innovative software application and service that combines the advantages of a traditional PVR, including the options to pause and rewind live TV and record your favorite shows, with the unique ability to program and record shows of interest automatically.

Called Intelligent Recording and Scheduling, this groundbreaking, proprietary technology provides users with a completely personalized TV-watching experience. Intelligent Recording uses proprietary algorithms to determine the viewers interests and automatically records shows based on their interests.

SageTV is an intelligent system that allows avid PC users to turn their PCs into PVRs," explains Dan Kardatzke, co-founder of Frey Technologies. It allows users to take their existing PCs to the next level by doing what no one else is -- intelligent recording." Frey Technologies was founded in April 2002 by Kardatzke and his brother Jeffrey, who is chief technology officer of the company and designer of the SageTV program.

Among the other key features of SageTV are one-touch recording, the option to watch a pre-recorded show while recording another, favorites recording, search capabilities, parental controls, and a fully integrated program guide.

Frey has worked to ensure that its software works with most common hardware and that technical support is always available to the user. SageTV is compatible with Windows 98SE or later Windows operating systems. The total cost for SageTV and the compatible hardware is around $200.

Unlike some other PC-based PVR systems, SageTV uses less than 5 percent of a computers resources for recording purposes, so it can be used without affecting the computers performance.

The fact that SageTV works as a supplement to existing technology, rather than as a stand-alone unit, sets it apart from the competitors and leaves open many possibilities for future advances. Were ahead of the technology and intend to stay one step ahead of the market," says Kardatzke. We also plan to expand into use of multiple tuners, HDTV, and use of a video server to feed multiple PCs on a home network."
