USB Flash Drives are in, Floppies are Out
Mobile Extensions, a NJ based online reseller of computer peripherals discusses why USB Flash Drives are key in tomorrows portable storage needs.
NEW JERSEY - March 14, 2003 -- Mobile Extensions, a New Jersey based online reseller of computer peripherals offers their line of the popular USB Flash Drives called Quick Disks. Ever since I personally started using them since last May, I have slowly and eventually stopped using floppies," company owner and founder," Tony Lu said.
The reasons are simple. The capacity from a single floppy diskette compared to a single USB Flash Drive is exponential. A 16MB Quick Disk USB Flash Drive by Mobile Extensions is the equivalent of 11-12 floppy diskettes. And there are USB Flash Drives out there that currently goes as high as 5GBs," said Lu. Then comes the price. An internal floppy drive goes for around $21, retail price. For the same price, you can get a 16MB Quick Disk USB Flash Drive, which is again, 11-12 times the capacity of a floppy diskette. Youd be surprised at how many people comes to us and asks us for external floppy drives. I wonder to myself why? Last time I checked, an external floppy drive costs around $60, retail price, " said Lu. You could buy our 128MB version at that price. Thats about 88-89 floppies."
USB Flash Drives are mini hard drives" that you can transfer files from computer to computer via the USB interface. Measured at 3"(L)×1"(W)×0.5"(H) and weighing only 0.7 ounces (no difference among the different capacities), Quick Disk USB Flash Drives works on various operating platforms from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP, Mac OS 9.2 and above and from Linux Kernel 2.4. The only driver needed is for Windows 98 SE, which comes with the package in the form Pocket CD-R along with a neck strap and an USB extension cable. Quick Disk USB Flash Drives are rewritable up to 1 million times with a data retention rate of 10 years, and available currently from 16MB all the way up to 512MB.
Recently, Dell Computer Corp. decided to phase out the floppy drive on their line of Dimension desktop computers in favor of USB Flash Drives for many of the same reasons Mobile Extensions pointed out. Other computer juggernauts such as HP while not replacing the floppy with USB Flash Drive just yet will be terminating the reverent floppy drive within the next 3-5 years.
