TAKES THE PRIZE
AT HEARD MUSEUM SHOW
Dina One Heart Gilio of Rohnert Park (Sonoma County, CA) brought home a Best of Division award for her prizewinning beaded leather jacket at the recent Heard Museum American Indian Art Show in Phoenix, Arizona.
This is her ninth award in the four years she has been attending shows.
The Heard show is one of the countrys top two Native American Art Shows and each exhibitor must meet rigid standards.
Gilio, a descendant of the Colville Confederated Tribes of Washington, calls upon the traditions of her ancestors who worked with deer hides to create items of clothing and accessories for sale during early reservation days.
Here it is a hundred years later and I am doing essentially the same work," she said.
Gilio is also one of only a dozen Native American artists who will participate in the upcoming 34rd Annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, known worldwide as the Jazz Fest" , April 24-May 4.
Her work will be on display in the Native American Village, one of the festivals four special exhibition stages.
The elaborate and detailed beadwork of her purses, jackets, vests, and other items will be featured at an upcoming Gathering Tribes, gallery event. Gathering Tribes is an East Bay gallery that specializes in contemporary Native American art.
Gilios work has also been featured at the Southwest Museum Intertribal Marketplace where she twice received Best of Division (2000, 2002) and the Native Contemporary Arts Festival in San Francisco (Best of Show 1999 and Best of Division 1999).
Other awards include Best of Category and Artists Choice, Southwest Museum Intertribal Marketplace, and Honorable Mention at the West Valley Fine Arts Council Native American Festival in Arizona.
