Every year thousands of people from across North America gather outside Fort Benning, Georgia in response to the controversial U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA). SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin soldiers, among them dictators like Manuel Noriega of Panama and death squad leaders like Roberto DAubuisson of El Salvador.
Controversies surrounding SOA and U.S. policy in Latin America are boldly explored in HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT, an informative and provocative feature-length documentary that presents different points of view about the nature and consequences of such policies.
Narrated by Martin Sheen (of TVs West Wing), the documentary features interviews with political thinkers, such as Noam Chomsky and Eduardo Galeano, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Ca), Army officers, including Major General John LeMoyne, and social activists.
There will also be a special musical presentation by David Rovics and others.
HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT is produced by Ravens Call Productions, a non-profit organization whose members include award winning filmmaker John Smihula, Vivi Letsou whose film Skeleton Woman is a film festival hit, and activist Andrés Thomas Conteris who is currently co-producing a documentary about U.S. bombing of Vieques.
Hailed by Amnesty International as a courageous work, which tackles the issues of U.S. economic and military policies in Latin America, HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT has already been screened at the 2003 World Social Forum in Brazil. Future screenings include the Alliance for Democracy in California, the Chicago Latino Film Festival, The Commonwealth Club San Francisco, the Seattle International Film Festival, and the Istanbul International Film Festival.
