Golden Age of Radio to be Recreated in Austin
Austin, TX -- March 14, 2003 -- The Violet Crown Radio Players will perform a live radio drama at the Acting Studio, 5811 Burnet Rd, on March 28-30, 2003. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday. The show is a double bill featuring a chilling episode of Quiet Please," as well as a humorous vintage episode of Fibber McGee and Molly." Admission is $5, and concessions will be available. A free soft drink will be provided to audience members who arrive dressed in vintage 1930s or 1940s era costumes. Audiences should plan to arrive early, as seating is limited.
The Violet Crown Radio Players are a radio drama troupe based in Austin. They recreate the golden age of radio through family friendly performances featuring costumed actors, live sound effects, and live period music. Audiences are treated to a rare glimpse of what radio theater production was like during the first half of the 20th century. The groups Executive Director, T.E. Heidel, says, Its just great family entertainment. All it takes is a little imagination, and radio drama can take you around the world." Adds Heidel, We try to really immerse the audience in the recreation of the bygone days of radio drama. That's why we encourage audiences to dress in vintage costumes, to help us capture that aura of a lost age."
The troupe will perform an episode of Quiet Please" entitled Whence Came You," a suspense tale that first aired on February 16, 1948. It is the chilling tale of an archeologist, Austin Gobetz (played by Ryan Hill), who is pursued by a mysterious woman through the streets of Cairo and into the Tombs of the Pharaohs. Evocative and dreamlike, Whence Came You" is guaranteed to be a spine tingler.
The Players will also recreate an episode of Fibber McGee and Molly," a popular comedy program from the 1940s. The Violet Crown production features Mark Finn and Lisa Sutton as Fibber and Molly McGee, a salt of the earth duo. In this episode, the pair struggles to design a household budget with predictably hilarious results.
The performance will include live selections by the Puddin' Hill Mob, a four piece band who will help complete the audience's trip back in time with raucous musical selections from the swing era. In addition, the show will feature live sound effects. Using everyday materials, the troupe magically creates a rich aural landscape. Audiences will be delighted as sound effects technicians bring Egyptian tombs, city streets, and even a crowded trolley car to life using ingenious and unexpected items.
